Key Facts EDGE evolution (sometimes also called EDGE+ or EGPRS2) is an enhancement of the GSM/EDGE standard to increase the maximum data throughput of the existing GSM/EDGE network by means of minor modifications. The improvements include downlink dual carrier operation, higher-order modulation (16QAM, 32QAM) in combination with an optional higher symbol rate and turbo coding, latency improvements, and the use of RX diversity at the mobile station. Depending on the features applied, peak data rates of up to 1 Mbit/s will be achieved. An other interesting improvement to the GSM standard is called VAMOS which stands for Voice services over Adaptive Multi-user channels on One Slot. Its main goal is to increase number of voice users per base station by connecting to two users per slot per frequency carrier. VAMOS introduces to the network an Adaptive QPSK (AQPSK) modulation scheme and new orthogonal training sequences. The extensions for the signal generator AQPSK and new training sequences come as part of the K41 option and are fully integrated into the user interface of the GSM/EDGE options. The R&S®SMBV-K41 option extends the R&S®SMBV-K40 GSM/EDGE option to EDGE evolution and VAMOS.
